On the 20th of June, 2007 Tharangu Rinpoche visited the Nyima Tashi Kagyu Buddhist Centre - E-Vam Institute sister center in New Zealand.
This DVD is a record of his day and teachings at the center.
A dramatic storm erupted on the day when Thrangu Rinpoche and his
entourage of monks arrived at the Nyima Tashi Centre in Auckland in June.
Thrangu Rinpoche was delighted to make this visit and showed his warm
appreciation to Ani Jangchub as she introduced him to Traleg
Rinpoche’s newest centre. The Traleg Rinpoches have been the
principal lineage holders at Thrangu monastery in Eastern Tibet since
the 16th century.
Thrangu Rinpoche and his monks immediately felt extremely joyful and
at home in a place which has been blessed by Traleg Rinpoche’s
presence. Thrangu Rinpoche was scheduled to teach on the Kagyu
lineage prayer but first spontaneously taught about the incarnations
of the Traleg line, the first of whom was Nyima Tashi who is said to
have lived at the time of Chodrak Gyamtso, the seventh Gyalwang
Karmapa (1454- 1505). Nyima Tashi, the Birth - Recollector devoted
his life to silent practice in sealed retreat, realising Mahamudra,
remembering his past births and prophesying his future ones and
singing vajra songs for the benefit of practitioners.
Thrangu Rinpoche who is often spoken of as the foremost contemporary
scholar of the Kagyu School of Buddhism then gave a very useful
commentary on the Supplication to the Gurus of the Kagyu Lineage,
which is recited after the Refuge Prayer before meditation practice
and teachings. He elucidated how the prayer reminds the practitioner
of the great teachers of the lineage and their example, the role of
renunciation, devotion, aware-ness and the understanding of thoughts
in meditation practice and the bond with the guru and finally the
wish to attain Buddhahood.
Thrangu Rinpoche and his party later chanted and joyfully made
offerings to Traleg Rinpoche, who was at the time in the USA and they
were very reluctant to leave at the appointed time. Ani Jangchub and
the people at the Nyima Tashi centre that day were very moved and
gained a greater understanding of the extraordinary quality and power
of the current Traleg Rinpoche, IXth.
A DVD of Thrangu Rinpoche’s visit and teachings at Nyima Tashi is
available at the E-Vam as a fundraising initiative
for the Nyima Tashi Centre.
