Daniel Goleman will discuss his series of scientific encounters between the Dalai Lama and groups or prominent scientists that seek to enlarge the scope of cognitive science, by joining together scientific and contemplative approaches to the study of consciousness and cognition.

BUDDHIST CONTEMPLATIVE SCIENCE
B. Alan Wallace, Ph.D., will discuss innovative ways to integrate Buddhist contemplative practices with Western science to advance the study of the mind. Dr. Wallace holds an undergraduate degree in physics and the philosophy of science at Amherst College and a doctorate in religious studies at Stanford. To this course he brings his deep experience and applied skills to the challenge of integrating traditional Indo-Tibetan Buddhism with the modern world.

PROVOCATIVE WAKEFULNESS
Acarya Judith Lief, will draw upon the essential instructions of Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche. Trungpa Rinpoche placed great emphasis on the practice of meditation and gave many essential teachings on meditation practice as the most effective tool for awakening from deception and opening ourselves to the dharma. In this workshop, we will cover key points of meditation practice, as taught by Trungpa Rinpoche, and engage in group practice and dialogue to deepen our understanding and direct experience.

The mandala principle serves as a psychological map of great sophistication and practical relevance. In this seminar, we will explore colorful patterns of mind, both confused and awake. By looking closely into the nature of our own physical, mental, and emotional patterns, we can begin to shift our allegiance from the stagnant and claustrophobic world of ego to the more open, compassionate and daring space of awakening.

This is referred to as "basic goodness".

THE SEVEN STEPS TO ENLIGHTENMENT
The Seven Steps to Enlightenment - Based on the teachings of Virupa's oral transmission The Three Visions of the Path and Result which contains all the teachings of the Hinayana, Mahayana and Vajrayana necessary to achieve Buddhahood in one lifetime. These teachings are preserved as the main teachings of the Sakya Lineage. Lama Migmar will offer six teachings on the above topic. Each teaching will be complete in and of itself so students can attend all or those they wish. It will include chanting and meditation.

A Special Transmission Outside of the Scriptures." An examination of the legacy of the Indian Monk Bodhidharma's "Direct pointing to the human mind" and how it shaped Chinese and Japanese Zen. We will explore the dynamics of the teacher/student relationship in Zen training and how it functions in Dharma transmission.

ZEN MEDITATION IN KOAN INTROSPECTION AND SHIKANTANZA
Zen Meditation in Koan Introspection and Shikantaza". We will examine some of the unique characteristics of zazen (siting zen) and how it functions in the Soto Zen School practice of shikantaza (just sitting), and the Rinzai Zen School practice of koan introspection. We will explore the commonality and kind of samadhi in both these styles as well as the differences n the gradual vs. sudden approaches to awakening.

This course based on teachings presented in Rinpoche's book, "It's Up To You" will explore the notion that every being has the potential to be free from suffering and that it is up to us to recognize this and take the necessary steps to get there. Self-reflection is the key to obtaining the peace we all strive for. This course will outline some of the steps crucial to this process.

NAROPA'S TEACHINGS
This course will introduce and explore the profound teachings of the great master Naropa who lived in the 11th century in India. A scholar and realized meditation master, he studied at the famous Nalanda University, which he later left to become a yogi and meditation master under the famed Tilopa. A great lineage master, his practices and teachings form a core of the Kagyu practices to this day. |
